There are many causes of back pain, and some require immediate medical intervention (such as cauda equine). However many people suffer from low-grade muscular back pain and stiffness, on a daily basis and simply put up with it and take painkillers. Many people today, have to endure long working hours, sitting at a desk, standing up for long periods of time, looking after children, cramming in daily chores, and plenty of stress!
It is always advisable to see your GP if you develop back pain, in order to rule out the more serious conditions, but the question is what to do next?
If you leave your back pain and hope it will go away, chances are the body will find a way of relieving the pain, in the short term, but these symptoms often return, and the pain becomes more widespread.
Have you considered massage therapy?
Massage helps with the management of back pain as it induces muscular relaxation, lowers anxiety, which can be exacerbated when you’re in pain, and returns tired, over-worked muscles to their normal function. Massage also increases blood circulation, allowing fresh nutrients to the affected area of back pain (particularly beneficial to muscular injuries and strains). It also can help increase your range of movement and reduce stiffness. Massage therapy also stimulates the production of endorphins, which are the body’s natural painkillers, sometimes referred to as feel good chemicals.
Regular massage can really help alleviate all sorts of back pain (as well as neck and shoulder tension) so next time you reach for the pain killers- think about booking in for a massage too!
